Joseph Pighills lived all his life in Oxenhope near Keighley, Yorkshire and did not start painting until he was sixty-three years old; taking evening classes in art at Keighley School of Art.
Bradford Museums and Galleries held a commemorative exhibition of his works in 1985.
Pighills' work is held in the permanent collections of Leeds City Gallery, Cliffe Castle, Keighley, Cartwright Hall, Bradford amongst many other galleries in Northern England.
