George Howard, 9th Earl of Carlisle (1843-1911): Politician and painter.
After Cambridge University he trained at Heatherley School of Fine Art, London.
As well as belonging to the Etruscan School, Howard was a great patron of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
This is a watercolour portrait of his eleventh child Aurea. Her name is very cunningly added into the turkish carpet behind her, top right.
The picture is in its original oak arts and crafts frame with the frame maker at Kensington Church Street named as E.W. Evans.
This would have been in keeping with the Arts and Crafts decor of his house at 1 Palace Green.
